20 Unofficial Dog Park Policies Put in Place by Pawrents to Protect Your Puppers

The dog park can be a place of wonder or a place of worry, it all depends on how everyone respects one another. So to help you do your part as a responsible pawrent we picked up this collection of unofficial dog park policies you can use to keep yourself and your puppers safe and happy while in the park.

Dog park etiquette is not often discussed on Reddit's r/dogs subreddit but we were lucky enough to find a concerned group of pawrents discussing the issue at great length. And rightly so, as if you do not happen to live in a place with vast swaths of land that your dog can run freely in, they need somewhere to release their energy and it is much better that place be the dog park than your apartment. But with far too many arrogant pawrents uninterested in taking responsibility for their doggo's indiscretions, many pawrents are left wondering what the right thing is to do in the dog park.

So we decided that enough is enough and that everyone deserves to be made aware of their responsibilities and obligations while socializing their doggo in the dog park. That way we can all be comfortable and calm when we let our dogs of their lead. While most of these rules are indeed common sense, you would be surprised how many people are ignorant of these common pieces of knowledge and need a little clarity to confirm their understanding. So before you start scrolling we thought we would throw a couple your way for good measure. First off, do not bring a big dog to a small dog park and visa versa. There is an incredibly good reason these puppers should remain separate. Secondly, aggression between pawrents is an absolute no no. No pup needs to see their pawrents receiving or giving aggression towards another person. They do not know the limitations of hooman communication and could quite easily consider the verbal exchange to be a fierce fight for them to get involved in. And thirdly be ready for everything, but prepawed to let your dog deal with things on their own sometimes. Being a helicopter pawrent is not going to help anyone, least of all your dog. And if you want them to be properly socialized sometimes you have to let them fight their own battles.

  • Holy moly, I have to say that the dog parks where I live are not quite as dire as the ones that are being referenced in this list so far. But it does go to show how little some people know or care about dog park etiquette. Which is a shame as at the end of the day it makes life better, safer and more fun for everyone. No one needs to be worried about stepping in an errant dropping that someone could be bothered to pick up. But at the same time hoomans should know better than to touch the grass in a dog park without the protection of a bag…

    taikapup No big spike collars!! You might think they look 'cool' but they could really damage another dog if they're playing with yours. Whether the spikes are sharp or not doesn't matter they can still poke another dogs eye out!

    CompleteSun5705 don't give food to other dogs. ever. some lady gave out 1 single b lly stick at the park when I was there and it started a huge fight. luckily no one was bitten or hurt but it could have been a lot worse.

  • Oh jheez, that is honestly dumber than running into a children’s park and screaming free candy while you throw candy in the air in all directions. If you can imagine the maelstrom that hooman kids would be whipped up into by such an event, then you can begin to imagine just how hectic and harrowing the same would be for a park full of doggos. It truly is lucky that everyone got out of it unharmed. So maybe keep your food to yourself and wait until you are outside the gates of the dog park before giving your canine a treat.

    Tuckersbrother Keep moving! The worst thing for the humans to do is to stand still in a group. I can't tell you How many dog fights I've seen start because the humans were just standing still drinking their coffee and letting their dogs just group up.
